13-Oct-2014: GBIF established as an ADU
The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (www.gbif.org) was founded in 2001 as an intergovernmental scientific infrastructure aimed at providing free and open access to biodiversity data, via the Internet. It offers a single online access point to more than 500 million biodiversity records published from around 15,000 datasets published by some 600 institutions. GBIF operates through a network of national and thematic nodes, and a secretariat (GBIFS) based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The GBIF secretariat has accumulated considerable expertise on open data publishing through its informatics development and its global community, resulting in a suite of manuals and a training programme that may be of use to many in the IODE community. Today, GBIF and IOC/IODE/OBIS signed an agreement of cooperation, recognizing the two initiatives as complementary with common goals on the management, publication and use of biodiversity data, with IODE/OBIS's special role in meeting the requirements of...
9-Oct-2014: Caribbean Marine Atlas 2 kickoff meeting report
48 participants representing 15 countries and 14 regional/international organizations met in Miami 25-29 August 2014 to launch the second phase of the Caribbean Marine Atlas project. The meeting report is available here.
The many presentations showed early on that there is no lack of national “atlases” in the region, but rather that there is a need for a platform and mechanisms that can facilitate the sharing of data and information, as well as expertise on atlas development. It was therefore decided that CMA2 should focus on the promotion of the best available and authoritative data sources, tools and services through a regional data, information and services platform that will contribute to the development of national and regional atlases and related products and services to support Decision Making and Monitoring & Evaluation processes for improved marine and coastal resources management in the region composed by the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystems.
1-Sept-2014: Lin LIU started her internship at IODE
Ms LIU is currently following an Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Maritime Spatial Planning. Previously she worked as a research engineer in Singapore and Hong Kong on hydrological and environmental modelling based on geospatial and remote sensing data.
During the next 5 months she will contribute to the second phase of the Caribbean Marine Atlas (CMA2) project, in particular related to MSP activities and marine biodiversity (OBIS) in the Caribbean Sea.
CMA2 will contribute to better Integrated Coastal Zone (ICZ) and shared Living Marine Resources (sLMR) Governance and Management in the Caribbean Sea, by providing key stakeholders a gateway to spatial data and information, guides to standards and best-practices and decision-support applications.

12-Aug-2014: ITCOOcean Hyderabad and IODE organize course on Ocean Colour Remote Sensing – Data, Processing and Applications
The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Service (INCOIS) and IOC signed a Memorandum of Agreement in July 2013 for cooperation in conducting training courses at the International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean) set up by ESSO-INCOIS in Hyderabad, India. The centre will operate as a contribution to IOC’s training and capacity development activities in mainly the Indian Ocean rim countries. It will cooperate with IODE's OceanTeacher Global Academy by providing a regional training centre. ITCOOcean is now organizing the "Ocean Colour Remote Sensing – Data, Processing and Applications" in Hyderabad, India between 10-14 November 2014. More information on the course can be found on http://www.incois.gov.in/Incois/ITCOocean_OCRS.jsp. There is no course fee charged for the training course. The participants are expected to make their own arrangements for all expenses, including International to and fro travel. However, INCOIS can provide local...
