Global Activities

The following Global activities are implemented by the IODE programme (click on the acronyms in the left menu to find out more) .

Every one of these projects or activities is implemented by many IODE experts through their national oceanographic data centres or marine library, or through the IOC Project Office for IODE, or both.

Description of the project / activity

______________________________________________________________________________

Standards (Ocean Data Standards)

The objective of this activity is to get broad agreement and commitment to adopt a few standards related to ocean data management and exchange, thereby assembling not only the agreed conditions by which we operate, but in fact enact these agreements in our respective organizations - See Standards

ASFA

The Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) Bibliographic Database is the principal information product of the ASFIS system. It contains approximately 1 million bibliographic references (or records) to the world's aquatic science literature accessioned since 1971 (for some journals and/or subject areas the coverage precedes 1971) [GE-MIM activity ]
_____________________________________________________________________________

Data Publishing The objective of this activity is to promote the ability to "publish" data sets as unique objects and their citation by other researchers as an incentive to improve the data flow to NODCs.
_____________________________________________________________________________
GODAR

Global Oceanographic Data Archaeology and Rescue - The goal of GODAR is to increase the volume of historical oceanographic data available to climate change and other researchers by locating ocean profile and plankton data sets not yet in digital form, digitizing these data, and ensuring their submission to national data centers and the World Data Center System. In addition, data on electronic media that are at risk of loss due to media degradation are also candidates for rescue.

GTSPP The Global Temperature-Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP) is a cooperative international project. It seeks to develop and maintain a global ocean Temperature-Salinity resource with data that are both up-to-date and of the highest quality possible. Making global measurements of ocean temperature and salinity (T-S) quickly and easily accessible to users is the primary goal of the GTSPP.
_____________________________________________________________________________
GOSUD The main objective of GOSUD (Global Ocean Surface Underway Data Pilot Project) is to collect, process, archive and disseminate in real time and delayed mode, sea surface salinity and other variables collected underway, by research and opportunity ships.
_____________________________________________________________________________
JCOMM JCOMM is an intergovernmental body of experts that provides the mechanism for international coordination, regulation and management of oceanographic and marine meteorological observing, data management and services systems. IODE collaborates with JCOMM through the JCOMM Data Management Programme Area (DMPA) and its JCOMM/IODE Expert Team on Data Management Practices (ETDMP).
_____________________________________________________________________________
Marine XML The development of a marine XML will support the tracking of data from collection through to the generation of integrated global and regional datasets. XML can support the metadata describing the data collection, quality control and subsequent processing. The generation of data tagged with XML at the instrument level would provide the ability to automate such processes as generation of metadata descriptions.

OceanDocs OceanDocs - Repository network on oceanography and marine science. [GE-MIM activity]
_____________________________________________________________________________
OceanExpert

The OceanExpert system, formerly known as Global Directory of Marine (and Freshwater) Professionals, is a database containing information on individuals active on issues related to the marine (and freshwater) environment. It is intended to be a tool for scientists, policy makers and anyone who needs to contact a marine (or freshwater) professional. [GE-MIM activity]
_____________________________________________________________________________

IODE OceanDataPortal The objective of the Ocean Data Portal is to facilitate and promote the exchange and dissemination of marine data and services. The ODP will provide seamless access to collections and inventories of marine data from the NODCs in the IODE network and will allow for discovery, evaluation (through visualization and metadata review) and access to data via web services.
_____________________________________________________________________________
OceanTeacher

The objective of OceanTeacher is to provide training tools for Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange. These tools are used during IODE Training Courses but can also be used for self-training and continuous professional development. The Ocean Teacher web site is comprised of two components:
(i) The IODE Digital Library and (ii) Training Courses .

OpenScienceDirectory Available via the Internet at no charge, the Open Science Directory provides developing regions a comprehensive search tool for all open access and special program journal titles. Designed to enhance access to these collections by providing direct links to journals and articles in the EBSCO A-to-Z title database, the Open Science Directory offers immediate access to approximately 13,000 scientific journal titles, with an objective of 20,000 titles midway through development. Among the main open access collections in the Open Science Directory are DOAJ, BioMed Central, HighWire Press and PubMed Central, and special programs HINARI, AGORA and OARE. INASP-PERI and eJDS will be added in the near future. [GE-MIM activity]

SeaDataNet SEADATANET aims to develop an efficient distributed Pan-European Marine Data Management Infrastructure for managing these large and diverse data sets. The objective is to network the existing professional data centres of 35 countries, active in data collection, and provide integrated databases of standardized quality on-line.

WIGOS  The WMO Integrated Global Observing Systems (WIGOS) is a concept for a
comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable system of observing
systems. he WIGOS Pilot Project for Marine Observations
(http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/www/wigos/marine_pp.html ) will be
implemented and sustained by the WMO and IOC Members through JCOMM in
order to make appropriate datasets available in real-time and delayed
mode to WMO and IOC applications through interoperability arrangements
with the WMO Information System (WIS) and the IODE Ocean Data Portal
(ODP). The Pilot Project will promote the following: (i) documentation
and integration of best practices and standards among the marine
meteorological and oceanographic communities; (ii) interoperability of
marine data systems with the WIS in close cooperation with the IOC
ocean community; and (iii) establish compliance with the WMO Quality
Management Framework (QMF). The development of the ODP and its linking
to the WIGOS objectives furthers the objectives of both JCOMM and IODE
and will provide WIGOS with links to oceanography and marine
meteorology data and products.
